In response to an angry mob

I’ve never received so many replies to a post in such a short time. It’s obvious some mac site must have linked to me, which is why I’m only getting responses from that side of the fence.

First of all, this is just my shitty blog. I didn’t write this to get hits. I didn’t even expect people to read it. No need to bring out your tin foil hats or call me a Microsoft fanboy. I made an honest observation, based on this year’s Macworld keynote (which you must all agree was pretty fucking lame).

But this is fun! Let’s see if any of these guys can sway my opinion or if they’re just angry dicks who can’t help but take Apple-criticism personally:

College admin sys says:
As a sys admin at a college I can say… it ain’t going to happen. More iphones, ipod touches, macbooks and macbook pros show up every year. The kids love the stuff.

There is no doubt they are Apple’s target audience. Just like they are willing to pay $150 for a pair of sneakers they’d gladly pay a little extra for a shiny computer.

E says:

You are so misinformed it isn’t even worth responding.
[...]
I imagine you mean a PC from Dell or HP. Will do more? SInce the Mac can run Windows AND Mac OSX AND Linux, while the PC can only run Windows and Linux, how exactly does the PC “do more”?

Thank you for responding. I’ve had my PC for years and years and instead of buying a completely new computer every year from HP or Dell I only replace bits and pieces now and then. It’s a cheaper way to upgrade and stay ahead of the curve.
Also, you are only proving my point by saying a Mac runs Windows and calling that a feature. The fact that so many people run Windows on their Macs is a clear hint of Apple’s future as a hardware manufacturer and not a software company.

Frank Corrigan says:

I hesitate to post a reply to this as I think it might be some kind of Joke. But here it goes….

“No one gives a shit about their software. ” — Wrong, it’s all about the software

“I’ve tried to learn more about the Mac OS and its software but its almost impossible to find any information” — Try Apple Developer Connection or anything to do “Open-Source” or “Unix”

Compare this with (what many still consider to be Apple’s main competitor) Microsoft. Microsoft is a software company and thus arguably not even a competitor. Microsoft has a number of events each year, one of which is PDC. PDC is a developer
conference. — Try WWDC Apple’s World Wide DEVELOPER Conference .

Apple’s strategy seem to be “Give a man a fish. He’ll love it!”
– ALL Apple Developer Tools Ship for FREE on Every Mac Computer shipped by Apple, A developer connection membership is FREE to anyone who wishes to join. Apple Software is based on Unix which makes porting from other Unix System a snap.

Software is the reason for Apple’s recent market-share gains. The Hardware is just a benefit.

Thank you for the first educated response! It’s true. I’m unaware of those conferences. I should probably be clear that I am a software developer (in the video game sector) and I try to stay up to date in the software community. But I’ve never heard or even stumbled across any Mac-based developer forums. Other than the occasional porting project from another OS. I’ll make sure to read up on those conferences.

Rob says

That was a hilarious read. You really haven’t got a clue about Macs and Mac OS X, right?

No. I told you in the top of the post! It’s called an "observation".

Don says:

[A lot of dumb fiction and paranoia]

oz Says

I alway love reviews and commentary from people that have never used the product and don’t even have the basic understanding of the basic fact that what differentiated Apple is the software!

[...]

This falls under the category of self absorb opinions that state because i think so it must be a new worthy opinion. How about bothering to research a little more about the company, products and history before blabbing away.

Again. It’s an observation from a software developers point of view. I’ve actually done a fair bit of research into the history of Apple. Aside from watching a seminar by the old designers of the hardware I also caught some videos of the early OS. But we all know Apple is a much different company now than what it was in the 90′s. The reason why they’re still in business is because of their hardware designs. That’s what has always saved them.

Melangell says:

So, you’re an idiot making opinions about a subject you admit you know nothing about… There is hope though, you are only twenty-five.

Hi. Welcome to my blog! Who are you again?

not an idiot says:

why should anyone care about uninformed predictions??

You tell me! I’m as surprised as you are!

AdamC says:

Check out the latest laptops from Apple they are faster than most PC desktops…..

Again, hardware, hardware, hardware. Where is the software that will make me buy a Macbook over a PC laptop!?

If you didn’t expect anyone to even read it, why on earth did you write and post it, then?
Remember, when anyone anywhere in the world with internet access can find your blog, don’t be surprised if someone responds.
    You’re inscrutable.

This is the internet. This is my blog. I post my thoughts on it. That’s hardly a crime. Whether people read it or not is irrelevant to me. It’s not like I went to a Nintendo forum and told them Wii sucks and Sony will win the console wars. I wrote a blog post on my own website, based on my own observations, that some mac fan site later decided to link to.

Responses are always welcome and I’m the first one to say I’m wrong if the evidence is presented to me. The responses I’ve gotten so far has only done that on a few accounts. But in general people seem to be too quick at turning overly defensive and rude, which only has the effect of portraying the average Apple fan as an irrational zealot.

At this point I am willing to conceit that the post didn’t express the points I was trying to make as good as I had hoped, which is probably why people misinterpreted it as some sort of Microsoft propaganda. I still think there’s a valid point to be made.

It’s true I am a PC and I’m looking for the reason why people are so zealous over Apple’s products. To me they are only products. The only answer I could find was their stellar hardware designs, not their software. The Macworld keynote only served to support that notion. If anyone knows of any other reasons then feel free to educate me.
